Once I find a file, I usually need to work in its folder. I use Everything to find, FreeCommander to work, and JumpToFolder to send any window or file dialog straight to a folder I search for.
How it works
- In FreeCommander, one favourite tool opens Everything limited to the current folder.
- In Everything, opening a folder, or the folder of a file, opens it in a new FreeCommander tab.
- In FreeCommander,
Ctrl+3runs JumpToFolder. I type part of a folder name, and the current pane goes there.Win+`does the same anywhere, including any program’s Open or Save dialog.
Connecting the apps
Search the current folder from FreeCommander
In FreeCommander, Tools > Favorite Tools, add a tool:
- Program:
C:\Apps\Everything\Everything.exe - Parameter:
-s """"%ActivDir%"""", with four quotation marks on each side.
Open Everything’s folders in FreeCommander
In Everything, Tools > Options > Context Menu. For Open (Folders):
$exec("C:\Scoop\apps\freecommander\current\FreeCommander.exe" /T /C /L="%1")
For Open Path, $parent passes the folder that holds the item:
$exec("C:\Scoop\apps\freecommander\current\FreeCommander.exe" /T /C /L=$parent("%1"))
Jump to any folder with JumpToFolder
JumpToFolder is a small AutoHotkey program that runs only when called, then closes.
- Download it and extract it to a folder it can write to. It saves its settings there.
- Run
JumpToFolder.exeand openSettings. - Set the location of
Everything64.exe, and setSearch IntoFolders. Otherwise it opens files directly. - Set
ActiontoSave & Install Context menu, then press OK.
In FreeCommander, add JumpToFolder as a favourite tool (Ctrl+Shift+Y):
- Program:
C:\Apps\JumpToFolder\JumpToFolder.exe - Parameter:
-jump - Hotkey:
Ctrl+3, set as global so it works everywhere.
For Open and Save dialogs, I add a HotkeyP shortcut, Win+` , that runs the same program with -jump.
To uninstall, run JumpToFolder.exe, open Settings, set Action to Uninstall and press OK.
